MISSION STATEMENT

SEADS in Cambodia: Columbia Students for Southeast Asian Development & Service, seeks to engage students in Southeast Asian history, current events & culture by connecting them to local and international academic, entrepreneurial, social, cultural and humanitarian opportunities related to Southeast Asia. SEADS is an interschool student group at Columbia University in the City of New York.



PAST EVENTS

SEADS holds a variety of events to further awareness of issues related to international development as well as history in Southeast Asia, ranging from panel discussions to cultural and food programs, to serving as a platform for organizations such as the Asia Society of New York City to involve the Columbia student population in both on and off-campus events.



Below are some highlighted past events:



  • Panel and discussion on “Emerging Markets in Southeast Asia,” Fall 2010. Featuring investment bankers Matt Magenheim and Stephen Chen
  • Southeast Asian Cuisine Workshop, Spring 2011. How to cook a Cambodian appetizer (summer rolls), main meal  (yellow curry) and dessert (tapioca pudding with plantains); all of the dishes were vegan; the workshop was sponsored by 4Local
  • Screening of “To Catch a Dollar”, Fall 2011. Documentary follows Professor Muhammad Yunus (known as the father of Microcredit) and his journey to bring Microfinance to the United States
  • Screening of “New Year Baby,” Spring 2012. Documentary following Socheata Poeuv, founder and CEO of Khmer Legacies, on a journey to Cambodia where she tries to find out more about her family’s harrowing experience with the Khmer Rouge, an experience that many who have survived choose to stay silent about
